Meet Carol
Artist Statement
I am a shape master, following no rules. One definitive stroke leads to another. Color, shape, and expression become my collective North Star; always walking into the unknown.
After a decades-long tenure as a successful sculptor in Southern California, painting has become my new medium of choice. I have chosen acrylic paint, canvas, and wood to render my favorite subject: animals; whimsical, colorful animals with a bit of a story in each piece.
My life’s work happens in solitude where painting becomes a journey of spirit, self-knowledge, empowerment, and discovery. My imagination is restless, and creation my desire; using my hands and my heart to bring my subjects to life. As a child, I was encouraged to be creative and today I’m still exploring new ways to experiment with my art.
Bio
Born and raised in San Diego, Carol Mayfield studied art at SDSU in the graduate program, at the Archie Bray Foundation with Patti Warashima, Idyllwild School of the Arts with Maria Martinez, Mesa College with TJ Dixon, and Clay Associates with Rhoda Lopez, Eric Wood, and Jerry Thiebolt.
She taught ceramics for more than 30 years in public and private schools in San Diego, California. She also owned the beloved “Clay for Kids” mobile ceramic studio.
Now retired from teaching, she has immersed herself in painting narrative and colorful images inspired by nature. Similar to her many sculptures, Mayfield is now focused on making whimsical art of animals and florals; but now they are paintings with bright, saturated color palettes.
As demonstrated in her sculpture practice, Mayfield has a deep love of the natural world and translates her subject matter into joyful yet sophisticated works with conceptual underpinnings. Narrative, colorful, and whimsical are fitting descriptions of Carol Mayfield’s extensive body of work.
